"The Service Provider's of today are really serious about taking care of their back-end infrastructure to better manage their operations and provide better customer support. The focus is towards better handling their post-paid voice subscribers. However a market reality is that the pre-paid subscriber base is today 75% going towards 90% in the next few years. Also data services are slowly becoming important revenue generators and high margin business. The Europeon opertaors have shown that in markets which have reached saturation as far as voice is concerned can bring in the topline through value based data services. Why should the Indian market be any different.

Even though addition of new subscribers is important. But it is time that the Service provider's also started looking at margins and arresting the downfal in ARPU's. For this due consideration will need to be given to work towards a single rating engine strategy which handles:

• Pre paid voice and data
• Post paid voice and data
• Content rating and settlement
• Carrier interconnect settlement

Its time the Operators started looking at Average Margin per user (AMPU) as against Average Revenue per user (ARPU)."
